Our Story

At Royal Canal Cycle Tours we love cycle touring. There is no better way to experience and explore the Irish countryside than at your own pace and using your own pedal power.

Founded by Dave, a passionate tourer who has cycled extensively on dedicated cycle paths along rivers and canals in continental Europe. On returning to Ireland, Royal Canal Cycle Tours was established to offer multi-day traffic free cycling holidays for the first time in Ireland.

Our highly experienced team have meticulously designed our tours to cater for all ages and abilities. The Royal Canal Greenway allows you to enjoy the towns, villages, countryside and wildlife of Ireland’s Ancient East and Hidden Heartlands.

The canal and it’s towpath is 145 kilometres long and runs from the River Liffey in Dublin to Cloondara on the River Shannon in Longford. In 2019 the Greenway will open from Maynooth in Kildare to the Shannon River.

Maynooth is half an hour from Dublin city by car or train. There are 46 sets of locks along the length of the canal. The Greenway currently stretches through the counties of Kildare, Meath, Westmeath and Longford with further plans to continue it to Dublin on the east coast and to Galway on the west coast.

It will eventually be part of the Eurovelo 2 and provide a dedicated cycle route from the west coast of Ireland all the way to Moscow!
