At Royal Canal Cycle Tours we understand everyone has different abilities and interests, therefore the distances below are between selected accommodation points along the Royal Canal Greenway. For those interested in exploring historical sites or heritage towns off the Greenway, detailed maps with alternative routes on quiet country roads are included in our guides.

Day 1 – Maynooth to Moyvalley.         30km

We will meet you in the bustling university town of Maynooth and provide everything you need for your bike tour and answer any question you may have. Once you are ready to begin your adventure, the first-day cycling will take you through the small village of Kilcock and the market town of Enfield.

Day 2 – Moyvalley to Mullingar.           38km

After a nice easy first day, day two promises some of the most rural sections of the greenway. There are no towns or villages located on the greenway on this section but don’t worry there are wonderful canal bridges, locks and harbours and with plenty of traditional Irish pubs serving wonderful local food, you won’t go hungry!

Day 3 – Mullingar to Ballymahon         36km

Day four will take you from the Ancient East into the Hidden Heartlands. You will pass through the wonderful remote village of Ballynacorrigy. Further on you will visit the pretty village of Abbeyshrule. This Tidy Towns awards winner boasts a13th century Cistercian abbey and is the birthplace of the renowned novelist, playwright and poet Oliver Goldsmith. The final stretch will take you to Ballymahon and your accommodation for the night.

Day 4 – Ballymahon to Cloondara         26km

The final days cycling will take you through some of the most unique Irish landscapes, the living bogs. Located just off the Greenway is one of Longford’s most fascinating ancient attractions, the Corlea Trackway. A section of Iron Age bog road, which was constructed from oak planks in 148 BC, has been preserved in the visitor centre. As you arrive at Richmond Harbour in Cloondara, where the Royal Canal reaches the River Shannon the 46th lock, you can enjoy a refreshing drink at the Richmond Inn.
